OEM stands for 'Original Equipment Manufacture', an industry term for software that is re-distributed by the software publishers, unpackaged from the normal retail box into a CD Sleeve or a flat pack, and or white box. According to the terms of it's license the OEM software publishers' requirement is that it normally can ONLY be supplied with PC hardware and generally can ONLY be sold with new electronic equipment, PC hardware components, and full operating PC systems.

  • What does OEM mean?
    • "OEM" software is (Original Equipment Manufacture - OEM) The manufacturers Software to be distributed ONLY with the hardware equipment! - (PC and associated hardware).
  • What are the rules and obligations of OEM?
    • "OEM software" must be either be bundled, package into the hardware price or sold as an ADD- ON with hardware equipment sold.
  • Is the software a full working edition?
    • OEM software usually is Full Version software which includes just the CD-ROM, the product key codes and or the Certificate of Authenticity (COA), and sometimes a condensed manual with a software license. These elements are all you will need to load and run the software. The software runs exactly the same way as the full retail version (including automatic updates).
  • What are the main differences between OEM and Retail Box software?
    • OEM software does not qualify for tech support from some vendors!
    • OEM software does not come in a Retail Box. Usually just the CD and or CD manual, license in a flat pack.
    • OEM software manufacturers or copyright holders insist that hardware equipment (sometimes specific hardware) be packaged with their OEM software products.
  • What does CAL stand for?
    • Client Access License. These grant the right for a computer to have access to the server, which is different than an operating system or workstation license which grants you the right to have an operating system running on your system.
  • What does DSP stand for?
    • Delivery Service Partner. DSP is a type of OEM software which is non-branded or non-stickered, but packaged for the system builder OEM rollout. An example of branded software would be software which has the "Dell" logo printed somewhere on the software. DSP software will no such logos printed anywhere on the software.
  • What does COA mean?
    • Certificate of Authenticity. This confirms that the product was legitimately manufactured by Microsoft.
  • What does media mean?
    • CD or DVD disks will be included.
  • What is the difference between an update and an upgrade?
    • An update is basically a software patch that you pay for. An upgrade takes you from one version to another such as from Windows 98 to Windows XP. Going from Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE(second edition) would require an update
